You Need a Good Laugh

During my teenage years I use to watch different standup comedians that performed on stage doing their live performances. The comedians would have their performances recorded either on a vinyl LP record or on a VHS tape telling their jokes to the audience. I would listen to such standup comedians like Richard Pryor, Bob Goldthwaite and Eddie Murphy.

Over the years other standup comedians like Cedric the Entertainer, Steve Harvey and three others helped to break new ground into television by performing in their comedy movie called The Kings of Comedy. However, the one standup comedian that always made me to laugh the most was from the other ones that I listen to was Bill Cosby. In his self-titled comedy movie called Bill Cosby Himself he shared several funny stories like a person going out to have a good time for the weekend and the story of the brain damage child. When there were times in my life that I was under a lot of stress, watching his movie always helped me get through my stressful day by laughing at his jokes.

According to one online article that I read called “Stress relief from laughter? It’s no joke”, the article explained that laughing has short and long-term benefits from relieving stress in a person life. When comes to the short-term benefits of laughing, laughing can help to increase oxygen in a person lungs. A good laugh can also help to improve a person heart, provide muscle relaxation and reduce their stress level. When comes to the long-term benefits of laughing, a good laugh helps to improve a person immune system to fight off diseases that try to attack their body. It has also been reported that laughing is a pain reliever which can remove pain that a person may experience in their body. If you are a person who needs a good laugh, there are three things you need to understand why the Lord created us to laugh. The first reason why having a good laugh is important is that laughing is an expression of the joy of the Lord in your life. A second reason why having a good laugh is important is laughter heals the hurting soul. Finally a third reason why God has given us the ability to laugh is because through the good times and tough times our God is a promise keeper.

A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones (Proverbs 17:22).

You need the Joy of the Lord

The first reason why having a good laugh is important is that laughing is an expression of the joy of the Lord in your life. When our hearts are filled with the joy of the Lord which is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10), the overflow of it can be experience through us releasing our and having a time of laughing. The enemy knows that when we surrendered our life to Christ that there is nothing he can do about it. However, what He tries to do is make us ineffective in our relationship with the Lord and others by trying to steal our joy. The joy of the Lord is not something that the world has given to us but it is the Lord alone and we should never allow someone else to steal it from us. If we do lose our joy, we also lose our desire to laugh and our perspective on life can become distorted. However, though this might happen, the Lord is still able to make us laugh and get our joy back so that it will remain and that it can be full (John 15:11).

Our God is greater, He is stronger and He is high above everything else that would try to exalt itself in over His word. The Lord’s throne is not only in Heaven but our hearts as well and the Earth is His footstool (Isaiah 66:1), When things around us become overwhelming, our eyes should stay on the Lord and not focus on what is happening around us. The joy of the Lord can help us to understand that the problems we are confronted with are not there because we have done something wrong. However, those same problems can be the launching pad which helps us to experience a new revelation of the Lord as our Healer, Comforter and Provider. We do not need to panic but we can rest in the Lord and let go and let God do what He does best. The word of God says in Psalms 126:2-3, “Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them. The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad”.

Laughter heals the hurting soul

Have you ever thought to yourself why the LORD has placed in us the ability to laugh? Well I believe there are two answers to that question that we must understand. The first reason why the Lord placed in us the ability to laugh is that laughter has the ability to heal the hurting soul. There are some people who view being a Christian as a decision that you will never have enjoyment or joy in your life but enslaved to a bunch of burdensome commandments. If you experience adversity in your life, it is a sign that you are struggling to let go of things that provide pleasure in your life though it is not sin but it is a part of the world. However, this logic is a lie from the pit of hell only cloak in deception attempting to still a person joy in the Lord. When we are hurting and we need healing, the Lord can sometimes use people or things which can help us to laugh and heal our hurting soul. Our soul is made up of our will, our feelings and our emotions. When your emotions have been become damaged through a traumatic experience the Lord knows the right time to bring laughter into our soul which helps us to know we will get through our crisis.

Another reason I believe why the Lord has placed in us the ability to laugh is that “laughter is the sound that causes our soul to dance”. In Ecclesiastes 3:4 the word of God says that it is “A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance”. We live in a society that demands instant gratification and if things are not done the way people want them they want to make their disappointment yours as well. Our stress levels are off the chart because we working for companies that want to be better than their competitors and they ask their employees to work long hours to be the best in their industry. When we have reached the point of being burnout and we think about taking some time off for ourselves, we feel cannot do it because the workload to great and could put us further behind. However, when we allow ourselves to laugh, our soul is able to dance which can rejuvenate us in appreciating what have in our lives. When you see a person dance on stage their performance can be expression of many things that is on the inside of them. The person ability to dance gives them a freedom to express what they feel and at the same entertain hundreds of people who are watching them. When we allow the Lord to help us to laugh our souls will dance which will restored us and that we don’t always have to live a life that is stressed and burned out.

Our God is a Promise Keeper

Finally a third reason why God has given us the ability to laugh is because through the good times and tough times our God is a promise keeper. When the Lord promise Abraham and Sarah that they would have a son, they were both old in age. As they both went through the process of waiting to see if God’s promise would come to pass, Sarah suggested they help the Lord in Abraham having a son. Her suggestion in helping Abram though he was old was by him marrying Sarai’s handmaid name Hagar and she would be the one to have his son. When the plan failed by Hagar having Ishmael conflict brought out in the household and several years past without them having a son together. When the Lord appeared to the both of them of year before their son would be born, the Lord gave Abraham the name of their son name Isaac which his name mean laughter. However, instead them both being in agreement with what the Lord had declared to them, they both laughed at the Lord because they felt Sarah was past the age of her being able to give birth to a son. Though both of them laughed it still did not stop the Lord’s word from coming to pass and Him revealing to them that He was a promise keeper. When Abraham and Sarah son Isaac was born, Sarah was filled with joy and declared to those around her that the Lord had made her to laugh (Genesis 21:1-8).

In 2 Corinthians 1:20 the word of God says “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us”. The Lord has given you a promise from His word that in His timing will come to pass. You going through your process of waiting for God’s promised to come to pass but delay at times has made you feel that you have been denied. You have even made the same mistake as Abraham did in your zeal trying to help the Lord in your own strength trying to make your breakthrough happen. You may even feel you have become too old because you are in your fifties, sixties or even in your seventies.

However, I am here today to remind you that our God is able to make you laugh and give you a testimony for you to share with others. The testimony that you will have is that the Lord is good and His mercy endures forever. You are going to have a testimony to share with family, friends and your coworkers that your God is a promise keeper. The Lord has kept His promises to His people like Simeon when He told him that he would not die until he saw the consolation of Israel (Luke 2:25-33). When Mary the mother of Jesus brought her son to be presented before the Lord in the temple, the Holy Spirit revealed unto Simeon that the Lord’s Christ was now before him. The same way that the Lord kept His promise to Simeon, Abraham and Sarah, He is going to keep His promise to you. Delay cannot prevent what God has for you from coming to pass because what is for you will be yours. While you are waiting, keep your expectation in His word, His promises and in Him because He is going to make you laugh next.
