Have you ever googled the two words men’s health? You would think the results would come back with topics like the benefits of having regular checkups or how exercise improves your health. However, when you google the two words men’s health the results that come up are the best cures to fix erectile dysfunction or the seven best male enhancements.
You will also find the results on how men can have better sex and intimacy with their partner. When it comes to the magazine Men’s Health, you will see men on the cover who are entertainers, actors, and sports stars. The phase Men’s Health is associated with men having ripped muscles, six-packed ads and the secrets to of man having a flatter belly. The world is dictating to us as men that being healthy is about having a good looking body that you can either take off your shirt or look sexy with it on.
However, the real message about men going to the doctor having regular checkups is buried in the back pages of all of the health and fitness magazines. Most men are familiar with what they put into their bodies from a workout perspective but others do not know what is going on the inside of them. If you asked a man when is Breast Cancer Awareness month, he will be able to tell you that it is in the month of October. If you ask a man when is Women’s History month, he will be able to tell you that it is in the month of March. However, if you ask a man what month is Prostate Cancer Awareness or Suicidal Prevention Awareness he probably won’t know that both of them are held during the month of September. Our physical health as men has to be a priority for us so that we can be around for those who need us in their lives. Not only should our physical health be a priority for us but also our emotional health as well. Finally, as men, we have the right to rest and rejuvenate ourselves so that we can accomplish our tasks without working the unnecessary hours in the workforce.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Romans 12:1).
Our physical health is a priority
According to one online article that I read from News Medical Life Sciences, “women go to see their doctors three times more than men”. Women know their primary physician names and are familiar with the medical history of their health because of the routine visits that they keep. The reason why most men do not go and have a routine physical is that for them they do not view it as of priority in their life. As long as a man feels he is okay he does not want to listen to a person tell him that he has to change his eating habits live healthier. Not only does he not want to be told this but he wants to eat the foods he enjoys though he knows it can be bad for him He does want to sit an exanimating room and to being told by the doctor that he has to stop smoking and drinking. All of the while the warning signs are there in his body saying if he does not listen to his doctor, there will be a day when he will have a medical crash with his health.
Why is it so important for us as men to have a primary physician and to go to the doctor regularly? The first reason why we need to have a primary doctor is so that we have someone who understands what is going on with us. When a man goes to the doctor for his regularly scheduled visit, the doctor is able to develop a baseline about that man and if there are any potential medical concerns that need to be addressed immediately. A doctor, will have blood work done, check your cholesterol level and also check for any pre-existing medical conditions. These preexisting conditions could medical concerns that either your grandparents, parents, or family members may have had themselves. However, when a man who thinks he is Superman begin to have health concerns and is rush to the hospital, he has to be kept for several days. Though he would like to leave the emergency room that night, the hospital is not able because that have to run all types of tests on him because he has no medical history. The man sits in the hospital aggravated because of what has happened to him and paying $150.00 instead co-pay of $25.00 the cost of a regular doctor visit. How do we as men fix this medical dilemma with our health? When comes to our bodies we have to make our health a priority so that we do not have the hospital gurney following us everywhere we go hiding in the shadows.
Our emotional health is a priority
Another health concern that we are not dealing with as men that should be a priority to us is our emotional and mental health. Since the time we were little boys if we fell and scraped our knees, we were told by a male adult that little boys do not cry. We were also told to suck it up and to take the pain and to not let others know we are hurting. We then grow up with that mentality and become men and when life beats us up we hold back the tears. We are hurting but we won’t tell someone because we do not want to be perceived as weak in their eyes and them seeing our pain. We suppress the pain emotionally and do not deal with it properly only to become a ticking time bomb one day waiting to explode. When the smoke clears we find ourselves in a psychiatric unit because we have an emotional breakdown because we went off in a fit of rage. If we are not in the hospital we might have been fired from our job because we hit a breaking point from being overwhelmed by the stress on the job. With no income to support our families instead of us turning to the Lord to provide for us, we choose to fall into a pit of depression being around others while we silently frustrated.
When we turn on the news we hear how more men are committing suicide by taking their own lives. When we look at the past mass shooting that has happened in this country they have happened at the hands of a man that was emotionally disturbed and some cases took their own lives as well. We have seen the mass shooting in places like Aurora, Colorado, Charleston, South Carolina and also at the Sandy Hook Elementary School located in Newtown, Connecticut. These men who were mentally unstable who felt they had the right to take innocent people lives and at the same time committing suicide violently using firearms and assault rifles. As men our emotional and mental health is under attack by the enemy which is the devil. We must turn to the Lord, His word and through the power of prayer to become emotionally healed. Some of us as men have been emotionally damaged in our childhood and we need the presence of the Lord to make us whole as men.
We have been like the man of Gadarenes in Mark 5:1-15 who have been living in the tombs, cutting ourselves and silently crying. However, the Lord wants us to surrender our lives in worship to the Him so that we can be clothed in our right minds. The Lord wants to heal our minds by pulling us out of the dark hole of hopelessness and gives us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). He does not want to give us a collar and title so that we can become preachers in the church, but he wants to make us whole as men that can be reunited with our families.
We have the right to rest
In Genesis 2:1-3, the word of God says that the Lord completed making the Heavens and the Earth in six days. On the seventh day, the Lord declared in His word “He ended from all His work and He rested”. Our God is all-powerful and in the book of Isaiah the prophet Isaiah said that Lord “does not faint and He never gets weary” (Isaiah 40:27). Well, Elder Strong why does the word say that the Lord rested if He never faints and He never gets weary? I believe the reason why the Lord stated in His word that He rested was to set a pattern for us as men that there is a time when we work and the times when we need to rest. As men, we have failed to honor God’s pattern of rest which He established for our benefit. Our jobs give us sick days, personal days and vacation days to use so that we can be reenergize and have a balanced work and family life. Our failure to learn how to rest has us as men susceptible to the heart problems, high blood pressure and other types of nervous disorders. We take all types of pain medicine for the pain we are feeling in our bodies but the true medicine that we need is to put ourselves in time out and to learn how to rest and not feel guilty about doing it.
Too many of us as men are like the energizer bunny in the commercial, we think we can keep on going and never run out of steam. We wake up tired the next day, we take no vitamins and feel low of energy. People in our lives are telling us that we are burning both ends of the candle while we are trying to maintain our family, serve in the church and build our careers. We know that the Lord has a work for us to do but for us to be effective at that work we must be committed to taking care of ourselves the same way we take care of our cars. Yes by the stripes of the Lord we have been healed Isaiah 53:5), however, we still have the responsibility that we have our own primary physician. The Lord is calling us to come to Him and to lay down our heavy burdens so that He can give us His rest. Once we have His rest we can cease from engaging in the works of our own efforts which in the past has broken down our bodies. The hurt and the pain we have kept hid from others we can now give to Jesus because He has a rest for us that will heal our souls (Matthew 11:28-29).
