Many years ago before our world had such things as I Pads, Kindles and Mac books, a person’s would have in their home various types of magazines to read. Some of these magazines were items like People, Sports Illustrated and Good Housekeeping. Not only would you find these magazines in a person home but you would also find a Holy Bible on their living room coffee table. If the Holy Bible was opened, you would find it opened to such familiar Psalms like Psalms 121, Psalms 91 or even Psalms 23.
Now the book of Psalms is a collection of Psalms which was mostly written by David to encourage God’s people to praise and worship the Lord. There were various chapters written by Asaph who was King David chief musician, the sons of Korah and others. The book of Psalms is also the second of five books which is a part of The Children of Israel’s Hebrew poetry making Himself know to His people. In Psalms 103:7, the word of God says “He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel”.
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper (Psalms 1:1-3).
What is A Psalms One Lifestyle?
You ask Elder Strong what is A Psalms One Lifestyle and how does one live that way? Before I share with you the definition that the Holy Spirit gave me let me first share a few things with you that the lifestyle is not. A Psalms One Lifestyle is not about serving the Lord through a series of dos and don’ts to make a person seem more religious than someone else. It is not about a person who has dedicated them self to memorizing scriptures so that they can appear to be more spiritually deep than others. A Psalms One Lifestyle is not about what title you have in the church and where you sit every Sunday in the congregation. However, the definition that the Holy Spirit gave me on what it means to live A Psalms One Lifestyle can be highlighted by these three important points.
The first point about a man who lives A Psalms One Lifestyle is that he does not allow the wrong centers of influence in his life. If there are people who are a wrong center of influence in a man’s life, a man will allow the Holy Spirit to remove them over a process of time. The most important center of influence in a man’s life is his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. His second important center of influence in his life is him meditating on God’s promises day and night. A man who lives A Psalms One Lifestyle understands that he has been planted by the Lord and not buried by his circumstances. Finally, the third point about a man who lives A Psalms One Lifestyle is that he knows that God wants him to prosper and be successful.
Having the wrong centers of influence
In the Financial Services industry, Financial Service Representatives are encouraged by their companies to have an established book business. It is not only a must for these financial representatives to have a book of business but each of them must cultivate and have centers of influence. A center of influence in the financial world means having an individual who is in a different profession such as Attorney, Accountant, or Private Banker who can help them meet new clients. As the financial agent sets up appointments with new prospective clients he will give them a presentation on how to accomplish their financial goals. These clients can sometimes be very wealthy and they trust the advice of their COI person to direct them to a trusted financial advisor who can help them with their financial and wealth management needs.
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful (Psalms 1:1).
In the first verse of Psalms one, the Psalmist writes that a man who is blessed is someone who does not allow the wrong centers of influence in his life. Who are the wrong centers of influence in a man life, they are people who walk in the counsel of the ungodly? The wrong centers of influence are also people who stand in the way of sinners and also sit in the seat of the scornful. A man who lives A Psalms One Lifestyle knows that when you walk in the counsel of the ungodly he is choosing to walk in the opinions, the ideas and the reasoning of men. The Lord wants us to walk in wise and godly counsel that is from the word of God that will help to direct and shape our lives. Also the Lord wants us to walk in His path of righteousness for His name sake and not stand in the path of sinners. He has raised us up and made us to sit in heavenly places and not to sit in the seat of the scornful. Being seated in heavenly places also means that when we humble ourselves, pray and seek God’s face, He will hear from Heaven because we are seated in heavenly places (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Planted by the Lord
In verse three of Psalms one, the word of God tells us that a blessed man meditates day and night on God’s word. A man who is blessed “shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season”. A blessed man also understands that he has been planted by the Lord and not buried by his circumstances. When a tree is planted by a person into the ground, the receiving hole has to be twice as large in diameter so that the tree can be planted properly. If the tree is planted too low it will not grow but if the tree is planted high it will not die. Once the tree has been placed into the ground the person planting the tree must loosen the roots of the tree so that it can properly grow into the ground. He must also use the right amount of dirt, specialize soil for the roots to backfill around the tree. Finally, a sufficient amount of watering must be done to saturate the soil which will help the tree planted into the person backyard to survive.
However, if the same tree had the ability to communicate how it felt about being planted into the ground and covered with dirt what do you believe its response would be to the person who planted it? Would it say to the one which planted it why did you bury me under all this dirt or would it say to that person you have planted me in the right place so that I can provide shade to your home? The word of God says in Isaiah 61:3 that “they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified”. A tree has to go through a process of development and grow to get the point where it brings enjoyment to the one who planted and also increase the property value of his or her home. When we are in a season of waiting for our harvest to come forth, we are to bring forth our fruit with patience (Luke 8:15). The process of delay does not mean we have been denied by the Lord on what we have asked Him for in prayer. It also does not mean that the difficulties we are facing are a sign that we have been buried alive by our troubles. The Lord wants us as believers to wait on the Holy Spirit to rain down His refreshing rain which will help us yield our harvest of breakthrough. We must let the Lord remove the weeds of bitterness, anger, and unforgiveness so that it does not block us from our blessings from the Lord. When Jesus prepared for His death, He told His disciples that “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit” (John 12:24).
God Wants You to Prosper
In the second half of verse three of Psalms one, the scripture tells us that a person “leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper”. Michael Hyatt who wrote a blog post called “Turning Failure to Your Advantage” said that “your failure is not final”. The reason why failure is not final for a child of God it is the feedback that they need to move forward. At first, when the realization has set in that we have failed at something that we wanted to accomplish, the emotional letdown can hit us like a ton of bricks. For a period of time, we might even begin to second guess our abilities wondering if we still have what it takes to get the job done. However, no matter how young or old you may be, when you depend upon God’s grace and anointing, He will help you to prosper. In Psalms 92:13-14, the word of God says “Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing”.
In Isaiah 40:8, the word of God tells us that “the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of the Lord shall stand forever”. The grass and the flower represent what we do in our human efforts which can cause us to experience failure. However, in Psalms 1:3 it says that “our leaf will not wither” because it represents the things that we do from the Kingdom of God. The Lord wants us to prosper in the things that He calls us to do in His name. Our life should be a reflection of His character and should be an instrument which can help to lead others to Jesus. In this difficult world that we live in there are people all around us who want to be happy and have a better life for themselves. A person may make the decision to change their diet and lose weight so that they can live a healthier lifestyle. A person may also spend their money on fancy clothes, expensive jewelry because they desire to live the rich and famous lifestyle. However, the person who seeks to have a relationship with the Lord, and the Holy Spirit to lead them will live A Psalms One Lifestyle.
