On Mother’s Day, we celebrate and honor mothers that are in our lives. As I think about my own mother, I know she is in Heaven and also in my heart. There so many memories that I have of her, but there are three that reminds me of how much she loved me. The first memory I have of her is how she would take me and my sister for walks throughout our neighborhood. One walk we took was to the library where she introduced me and my sister to the world of books and why it was important for us to read. A second memory that I have of my mother was how she got up every morning to get me and my sister ready for school. After she got us ready for school, she then got herself ready to go work. We did not have a car so she took the time to walk us to school and then she got on the bus and then went to work at her job. My mother always demonstrated to me and my sister that having a strong work ethic was important and the person who had it good things would come to them.
Finally, a third special moment that I had of my mother is when she had made the decision to allow me to walk her down the aisle as she got married for a second time. As I think back on that moment I was just a teenager around the age of sixteen to seventeen years old. My mother could make the decision to have my uncle walk her down the aisle or even my great uncle. However, on that special important day of her life, she felt that her little man and son she have the great honor of walking her down the aisle. My mother was very special to me and she always did her best show me and my sister how much she loved us. Now there are three important things I believe we must understand that our mothers and their love. The first thing that we must understand about a mother’s love is a reflection of God love. The second thing that we must understand about a mother’s love is it will fight for her children. Finally, a third thing we must understand about a mother’s love is it will live on forever in our hearts.
Strength and honor are her clothing;
She shall rejoice in time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness.
She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed (Proverbs 31:25-28).
A reflection of God’s love
The first thing that we must understand about a mother’s love is a reflection of God love. The word of God says in James 1:16 “Every good gift and every perfect gift comes from above”. Our Heavenly Father made and gifted man, male and female, with the ability to express love in many different ways to one another. In a relationship between a husband and wife the love that they share between one, another is called Eros love. A second type of love that friends have toward one another is called philia or brotherly love which is shared in friendship. The fourth type of love that is shared among siblings, parents, and children is called storge love. As siblings grow up together, they learn how to appreciate and love their brother or sister in their lives. The father and the mother also demonstrate this love for their children not just by their spoken words but also by the physical action show to their children. A father is able to express his love to his children based upon how it was modeled before him. A mother is able to express and show her love for her children in the same way that it was modeled before her from her own parents as well.
As human beings, the different types of love that we show to one another is love most times is shared based upon conditional love. I will give my love based upon the conditions that a person is able to meet and is in the best interest of not just themselves but for me well. However, the love that God shares toward us and pours into our hearts to share with others is called agape love. It is my humble opinion that the love that a mother shares with her children is a pure reflection of God’s love. The word of God says in Jeremiah 31:3 “The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love”. A mother’s love is patient with her children and she has their best interest at hand. A mother’s love is always willing to forgive her children when they ask for her forgiveness. She will teach them the importance that when they are wrong they must be willing to accept responsibility for their actions. A mother’s love for her children is not restricted by the color of her skin, her ethnicity, or her financial status. It doesn’t matter if she is affluent, rich, or poor, however, her love for her children is a reflection of God love from her heart.
Fights for her children
The second thing that we must understand about a mother’s love is it will fight for her children. In 2 Kings 4:1-21 the word of God speaks about two different women whose children were going to be taken from her. The first woman was a Hebrew woman whose husband had died, he was one of the sons of the prophets and serve the prophet, Elisha. The creditors wanted to take her two sons from her because her husband had died having an unpaid debt that the family was now responsible for. A second woman that the word of God speaks about was a Shunammite woman who had been blessed with a son from the Lord in her old age. After several years had passed in the young boy being a teenager, the son had died in the arms of the mother from severe pain in his head. Both mothers seeing that their children were in trouble when to the Lord for help through the prophet Elisha and trusted the Lord that He would save their sons as they fought for their children live in the face possible bondage and death.
On this Mother’s Day, we celebrate the mothers on how they have demonstrated their love by fighting for their sons and daughters. You fight for them by not allowing them to settle for anything less but to discover and embrace everything God has for them. As a mother, you fight for your children not to live beneath the potential and purpose God has given them. You fight for them to value the importance of having a good education and to help them understand the price that must be paid to have that education in our society today. You fight for them by arming them what to do and how to make it home if they are every stop by the police on the side of the road and not be on the late night news. The word of God says in Proverbs 31:26 that a mother “opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness”. A mother when she fights for her children understands that the weapons she fights with are not the instruments made by the hands of men. However, a mother knows that the weapons she uses to fight for her children are her love, her compassion, and her presence being there late in the midnight hours to support her children.
The hearts of her children
Finally, a third thing we must understand about a mother’s love is that it will live forever in the hearts of her children. During Mother’s Day children, young and old all show their love to their mothers. We show our love through the many gifts, cards, and words of appreciation that we have for her. Families get together to take mom out to dinner, take pictures together, or spending time with mom sharing and making new memories together. However, for others Mother’s Day is not a day which they feel can be celebrated because of their mothers are no longer with them. There are those who feel a sense of loss and emptiness mom is gone home to be with the Lord. There are those who find it difficult to enjoy the day because of the anniversary pain that they have in no longer having their best friend here with them.
However, the Lord wants you to know my friend that though your mother is no longer here with you, her wisdom, her strength, and love live on in your heart. Your mother through the help of the Lord helped to shape and mode you to be a strong man or woman of God today. Your mother’s love lives on in your heart because she was the type of parent who knew when and how to say no to you though you felt it was hard to accept at the time. Your mother saying no to you has taught you that immediate gratification makes you feel good for the moment but does not build strong character in a person. Your mother’s love was able to teach you many life lessons that would help to prepare you so when you went into the workforce, you were equipped to become an entrepreneur. The word of God says in Proverbs 31:16 that “She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard”. There will always be those times, went we will miss our mother smile, her voice, and her tender touch upon her face. However, be encouraged this day in knowing your mother’s love lives on in your heart and she is smiling and watching over you from Heaven.
